Terragen is a great program - not only does it provide an artistic outlet, but there's something about creating places that look like you could step right into them that's very appealing; it definitely puts another spin on escaping from reality. (Unless you plug in surface maps of real places that is.) You can even import images , such as fractals, and create surface maps out of them. I imported a photo of some Celtic knotwork once upon a time and discovered a whole new world.

The learning curve is very similar to Apo - you can immediately produce something, but it takes awhile of working with it to truly understand all the functions that are available and what they do.

Illustrator is best known (but not free unless you "steal" it ), but there are probably free programs as well.
